‘The British Portrait Miniature

Talk by Sue Sloman

Dr Susan Sloman FSA is an art historian and author with a special interest in the eighteenth century. She has been a member of the congregation at St Anne’s since moving to Kew in 2022. Her catalogue of the Thomson collection of British Miniatures in the Art Gallery of Ontario is published by Ad Illisum, an imprint of Paul Holberton Publishing, this month.

The British Portrait Miniature: likeness, reliquary, jewel

Specialist painters based in Britain, from Nicholas Hilliard in the sixteenth century to John Smart in the late eighteenth, were the most admired producers of portrait miniatures in the western world. Kew Green was home to two painters who are represented in the Thomson collection and the talk will refer to both Jeremiah Meyer, who is memorialised inside St Anne’s Church (and buried outside, next to his friend Gainsborough) and George Engleheart who was baptised in the church.
